Display And Some Of Its Types

What is the display?

A display for an electronic device is a part of the device which showcases the data and information from the device. Display of a computer can be divided into 2 types:

Cathode Ray Tube Monitors :

(CRT monitors used in Apple and what type of monitors are CRT)

CRT is actually an outdated type of monitor which were used back in the days to Make televisions and even used as computer displays. How it operates is there is a cathode ray tube which is basically an electron gun ray. It is positioned at one end of the display and a fluorescent screen on the other end. After there is a surge of power in the monitor the cathode ray shoots out high energy electrons from where it is to the fluorescent screen to produce data in the form of images. Apple also used CRT monitors back in 1980 with the classic Apple III computers, 2nd Generation, 3rd Generation, and 4th Generation computers.

Flat Panel Displays

Flat Panel Displays are the displays that don’t use a lot of space which include

Liquid Crystal Display :

(LCD monitors used in Apple and what type of monitors are LCD)

How LCD Displays work is that there are a couple of transparent electrodes and two polarizing filters that consist of a layer of color or monochromatic pixels arranged schematically. When the lights are polarized in different amounts, making it pass through the liquid crystal layer, data can be seen.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Important information: You will often see LCD Displays with LED which just means that the LCD Display is using a different type of backlight compared to the cathode ray tubes used in the past.

LCD consists of two types:

  • Active matrix LCD and
  • Passive Matrix LCD

Active matrix TFT

Active matrix TFT provides better picture quality than Passive matrix Technology which is slower in response than active matrix TFT. Active matrix TFT is also secure and reliable. Due to the popularity of Active matrix TFT passive matrix TFT is becoming outdated.

There are different types of LCD Panels too. This is important to us because most of the apple computers use these types of panels in their display. To better understand the types of panels, here is a list of the panels:

IPS Technology

IPS technology stands for In-Plane Switching. IPS Panels are manufactured by Samsung. It is one of the higher-priced panels that offer the value for its money in the service department. It is considered the best technology for image quality, color accuracy and viewing angle as well. It is also popular because it is the panel technology that is the most durable than any other panel technology. Most of the mid and newer apple computers are equipped with IPS Technology.

VA Panel

VA stands for vertical alignment Panels can be called the mid-tier LCD Panels because its features stand in the right price module for the regular consumers but its features are also limited to its price module. It does perform better color reproduction and wider viewing angles than TN Panels but it comes short if it is compared to IPS Technology.

PLS and Super PLS

PLS stands for Plant to Line Switching. It is also said to be an improved version of IPS Panel Technology. It is 10% brighter, cheaper, less power consuming and even faster response time than IPS Technology. Because of its slim design and profile, it is more fragile. It may be a little cheaper than the IPS technology but it is still more expensive than other panels out there.

AHVA Panel

AHVA stands for Advanced Hyper Viewing Angle. AHVA Panels can be confused with the VA Panels but it is a completely different system than the VA Panel because it uses In-plane switching. It is manufactured by AUO just like how IPS is manufactured by Samsung. It is an IPS panel that has a similar performance like the PLS panels.

TN Panel Technology

TN stands for Twisted Nematics.TN Panel Technology may be considered those panels that may be on the bottom of the list or at the top of the list depending on what you use it for. TN Panel technology is the cheapest panel and offers the fastest response time than any other LCD panels. TN Panel technology is mostly used for gaming purposes. It is also one of the most popular and sought out Panel technology because of its affordability and it’s availability. They are capturing the market with their production numbers and cheap price.

Organic Light-emitting Diodes(LED monitors used in Apple and what type of monitors are LED)

LED is a type of screen display technology that uses panels of Light-emitting diodes as light sources to produce data. Nowadays almost all the electronic devices we use, use LEDs because they are less power consuming and more efficient. LED Panel displays have several LED panel which consists of light-emitting diodes. LEDs are more efficient because they can produce brilliant and greater intensity of light.

After knowing about how LED Panels operate let’s move on to information on how OLED works. OLED does not work with polarization like LCDs. OLEDs use a complex organic light-emitting diode called yep. These yeps light up each pixel under the voltage applied to it. The color that it produces depends upon the organic diode while the brightness depends upon the amount of voltage passed through the system. It can usually reach HDR brightness because unlike LCDs it does not block colors but the molecules put out the right colors.
