MICROSOFT NOT SUPPORTING XP?
If you have Windows XP, you may have received a notification that Microsoft will no longer support it. You probably wonder what that means. First, it doesn’t mean that your computer will shut down and no longer function. It just means that you will no longer receive updates from Microsoft that protect you from viruses, and you will not be able to use many new programs written for your computer.
If we still had a computer with Windows XP on it, we would recommend upgrading at this point. First, you want to be protected from Viruses and all the antivirus programs are written for computers from today. So if you try to install anti-virus on your computer, your system will run so slow it will be almost unusable. Second, when new programs are written they probably won’t support windows XP and you don’t want to buy something that you need that night and realize you also need a new computer. It’s always best to upgrade when you’re not in a rush to get something completed. And it’s also a good time to do it when your old computer still works. Some people wait till their computer no longer functions to upgrade. Then they have an old obscure program they want us to make work and we cant access the old computer to see what was going on.
So our advice is, if you have the money go ahead and have us do the upgrade for you. That way we can hold your hand through the process and make things easier for you.
THE BEST ANTI-VIRUS
Time and time again, our customers ask us what we think is the best anti-virus program. Our answer to this is the one between your ears. Anti-Virus programs do protect you from viruses, but they come at a heavy cost. First, they all slow your computer down by as much as 50%. Second, most of them can cost as much as $70 per year. Which after several years ads up to the point that you would be money ahead if you just paid to get the virus removed. Finally, some antivirus programs can actually cause more trouble than they solve because they interfere with the system when you are installing new things on your computer such as printers and fax programs. We’ve actually had completely re-install windows after an antivirus interfered with the installation of a program.
If you want to prevent viruses, the first thing you can do, is don’t download attachments from email. Many attachments come with viruses and they are great at tricking you into installing them. You should also use google for search instead of yahoo. The final thing you can do is to not click on advertisements on the internet. These can often come from anyone and they are not safe most of the time.
Now you may be thinking, that We saying don’t get an antivirus. That’s actually not the case. If you feel like you want an anti-Virus We would recommend AVG. It’s great because it doesn’t slow your computer down too bad. And best of all, it’s free!
If you have a Mac, We can also help you with setup and repair. Macs are great machines but sometimes they run into issues and that’s where We can help. If you just got a shiny new Mac computer you may not be familiar with how to use them or how to set them up. We can help you transfer your data over from your old computer and even find equivalent Mac programs that do the same thing as PC programs.
If you’re having hardware trouble, We can also replace Mac hard drives, and re-install their operating systems.
If you are thinking of purchasing a Mac there are several things you should know. First, new apple computers are about double the price of comparable PCs. Second, they have a different operating system from PCs, so you will need to learn something new. Also keep in mind, that some of your programs you use on a PC won’t work on a mac. If it’s just the mac hardware you are in love with, but you don’t really care about the operating system, We can also install windows on a mac and make it so it has both operating systems on it.
Many of our customers ask what they can do for preventative maintenance.
First, and foremost don’t bother wasting your money on registry cleaners and PC speedup software. We can’t tell you how many computers we see that are absolutely the slowest machines, we have ever seen and they have speedup programs installed on them.
Second, defragmenting your computer is rarely necessary these days. Most new computers don’t even need it to be done because they keep their directory structured fairly clean as well the operating system have automatic defragmentating schedule.
Third, when you install programs make sure you read carefully what you are installing. Many programs come with all sorts of “Free” marketing software. These stuff are really bulky and nearly guaranteed to bring your system to a grinding halt.
Finally, if you do feel your computer is slow, don’t hesitate to give us a call. You may pay $80 to get it speed up. But trust us, you will enjoy your computer a lot more, when you see how much better it runs.
It’s also a good idea to dust out the inside of your computer with a can of air.
