Laptop not Charging Issue

MacBook Air screen at 90 degree to the keyboard. My laptop is not charging. What do I do?

If your device is not charging then it could have the following issues:

  • Power outlet not giving enough power or faulty power outlet
  • The charging cable could be damaged or faulty
  • The charging port could be damage
  • Software issue
  • Motherboard issue
  • The battery could be damaged

The very first thing you need to do when your laptop is not charging is to check your power outlet to see if it’s faulty by plugging other devices in it and seeing if it works. If the power outlet is good then you should check if there are issues with your laptop’s charging cable. Does it look damaged? Is the laptop’s charging cable have a green light indicator that it’s working properly? If not then there could be issues with your laptop’s charging cable. If there’s nothing wrong with your laptop’s charging cable and adaptor then we can move on to issues with your laptop.

After verifying that your laptop’s charging problem is not caused externally, we need to check for internal factors that could cause this. Before taking your computer apart, make sure that your computer’s battery drivers are updated.

After checking your laptop’s battery driver, check whether your charging port is working or not by using another charger and an amp monitor system. If the laptop is charging after using another charger, then there were issues with the charger and if it isn’t charging your laptop and on the amp, the monitor shows to take no amp at all then it is the issue with the battery or motherboard.

On windows to check the battery life of your laptop, just press the Windows key with X on your laptop’s keyboard. Then you can select windows power shell and select yes to the notification that says allow changes to take place. Then a new window will appear on your laptop. Make sure to type or paste this code into that window
powercfg /batteryreport /output “C:\battery-report.html”
and then press enter.
This will show you where your battery health report is saved.
Go to that folder and check your battery’s report, capacity and estimate.

On apple laptops or mac OS laptops just go to the apple icon on the top left-hand corner of the screen.
Select About this Mac.
Click on system report at the bottom of the new window pop up.
Go to power on the left-hand column of the new pop up window.
Check your battery cycle and health.
If your battery cycle is less than 500-600 then it is good, otherwise, you might need to get your battery replaced.

To check whether your laptop has motherboard issues, take it to a certified laptop repair shop near you and let the professionals handle that for you.

Graphics Card Issues

Macbook Pro on a white background with lid open at 90 degree and black screen with no display. The graphics processing unit(GPU) is one of the most essential chips and hardware components in the computer system because it helps create the visual that we see and interact with the computer with as users through manipulating and altering the memory. The most common symptoms of a GPU failure include weird lines and resolutions on the screen, intermittent restarts and shutdowns, computer lags and freezes when playing games and computer not turning on at all in the worst case, etc. There are many people who have a GPU failure because of overheating and irregular power fluctuations. We have seen many people come to our store saying they were just playing games or editing a video and then their computer shut down and they can’t open it again. Because GPU takes control of the heavy graphics processing in the computer, whenever graphics-heavy work is given to the computer then the GPU processes more and hence overheats sometimes causing the cooling paste on the graphics card to dry up and due to this the GPU experience failures. We understand how awful and counterproductive it is when your computer is not working because of a GPU failure. So, PC Service Dallas offers you with Laptop GPU replacement services where we take out the faulty GPU from the motherboard and replace it with the new GPU. We have a team of certified technicians who have years of experience handling any kind of repair problems related to graphic cards, so rest assured your laptop will be ready to game or perform heavy graphics rendering work in no time.

We understand that the computer is an essential part of your daily school and business/work. We want to keep your computer running well so that you can go back to your daily life. Our certified professionals will fix your computer on the same day in most cases.

What Is Computer Storage And Its Types

Alienware Tower opened up exposing hard disk drive, fan and wiresWhat is computer storage?

Computer storage is a hardware component of the computer that is used to store files temporarily or permanently in the computer system.

Let’s talk about computer storage. There are basically two types of computer storage:

  • Primary storage and
  • Secondary storage

Primary storage:

Primary storage is like the main memory of the computer where almost all the basic instructions for a computer to operate remains which is why it is the fastest for the computer to access. Primary storage can be divided into two types:

  • RAM
  • ROM

RAM : PCSeviceDallas technician holding a ram on focus with lots of RAM in the background

RAM stands for Random Access memory which is the part of the main memory which is also called temporary memory or cache memory because whatever is stored inside the RAM is temporary and gets easily wiped out if it is not saved and the power supply gets cut off. A higher ram means that the performance of the computer will be fast. You can upgrade the Ram in most cases but sometimes there are instances when there are no ram slots and the ram is embedded. In that case, you cannot upgrade Ram. In most of the newer apple MacBooks, the Ram is embedded.

ROM :

ROM stands for Read-Only Memory. The contents of ROM are written by the manufacturer and we as users cannot change the contents of ROM. The data stored in ROM is permanent and cannot be deleted.

Secondary Storage:

Secondary Storage can be defined as any other storage non-volatile devices other than the primary storage. It can either be external or internal and can store data permanently unless it is deleted, overwritten or the hardware breaks down or there is severe damage to the hardware. Some of the examples of Secondary Storage are:

  • Hard drive
  • Solid State Drive
  • USB Thumb Drive
  • SD Card
  • CD
  • DVD
  • Floppy Disk etc.

The commonly used secondary storage device used in computers is hard drives.

So what is a hard drive?

A hard drive is a device that stores all the software inside the computer whether it be the OS or game or utility and it also stores all the data files created, downloaded or used by the user. There are two types of hard drives

  • Hard disk drive
  • Solid-state drive

Hard disk drive(HDD)

A hard disk drive is a 500g device that performs the task of a hard drive. How Hard disk drive works? It is a remarkable piece of engineering because it is designed in such a way that various moving parts need to work together to store information in such a compact space. The data is stored in an arranged pattern which is in a circular format called tracks. Each track is separated into different sectors. One of the parts of the hard drive has a map that stores information about which sector has information and which sector is free. (In the Windows Operating System this type of map is called File Allocation Table or FAT) After figuring out which sector of the track is free, the part of the hard drive responsible for writing data onto the hard drive moves to the exact location and stores information in that section. If you want to access the information it is the same process but in reverse. The access time of Hard disk drive (HDD) is 10 ms. Access time is measured in a millisecond. The time it takes to Read data is 50-100 Mb/s. This time is calculated by megabytes per second. It consumes the power of around 6W. It is a very powerful device but it has its drawbacks. Because it is engineered with moving parts if only one part of the HDD is not working, there may be a chance of HDD not working at all. Even small particles like dust can also affect the HDD. If it is close to full, it makes the computer slow. So it may not be the most reliable if it’s not kept with care.

Hard Disk Drives Piled up together for replacement

So what do we do to get a more reliable, faster, less power consuming and lighter hard drive? We can upgrade our hard disk drive to a solid-state drive

Solid State Drive(SSD)

Hard disk drive(HDD) was a mechanical device that had physical parts moving to erase and retain data but Solid State Drive(SSD) is completely different than HDD because it uses flash memory. Flash memory uses memory chips (commonly NAND-style-chips). These chips contain semiconductors that use different types of arrays and flip them into different states of electric charge to store information. It is given the name Solid-state because none of the parts are moving. SSD is a little expensive in comparison but it makes up for its price point by delivering faster, reliable and easier service than HDD.

240 GB SSD connected to a wire for data recovery

The advantage SSD has in retrospect to HDD is that they have an access time of 0.1 ms and read speed of 200-500mb/s. This is because in HDD there are moving parts and SSD uses electricity to access data and read. Since electricity is faster it has faster process time. It also weighs less in comparison to HDD because it doesn’t need a heavy protective casing like HDD. It usually just weighs around 50g so it also has better portability. It consumes even less power than HDD because there are no moving parts that consume power. It is also said by scientists that it is seen to last generally longer than HDDs. And because it doesn’t have any moving parts it is less likely to malfunction in the new SSDs causing low failure rates. SSD can be connected to the logic board.

SSD can be differentiated by the different types of connections they come with. The connections are listed below:

SATAIII

This type of connection played a huge role in the transition from an HDD to SSD because it is the same connection option used by HDD. This was very helpful during the transition phase going from HDD to SSD but now since SSD is becoming more common SATAIII connection type has been losing their functionality. This connection can handle a maximum bandwidth of about 600megabytes/second.

PCIe

PCIe stands for Peripheral Component Interconnect Express Option. These connection types connect directly to the PCIe lanes of the motherboard of the computer giving it more direct flow to data. It makes the access speed and the read speed very fast. It supports SSD writing speed unto 1GB per second. It is a very expensive system and it increases the price of the computer significantly.

NVMe

NVMe stands for Non-volatile Memory Express is designed to upgrade PCIe connections so that they are more versatile, easier to upgrade and faster. This connection type is even newer than the PCIe and is even more expensive than the PCIe connection types.

How many types of Pin categories SSD have and what are they??

The pin categories can be categorized into

SATA pin and

mSATA pin

Display And Some Of Its Types

What is the display?

Windows User login screen on a dell laptop screen

A display for an electronic device is a part of the device which showcases the data and information from the device. Display of a computer can be divided into 2 types:

Cathode Ray Tube Monitors :

(CRT monitors used in Apple and what type of monitors are CRT)

CRT is actually an outdated type of monitor which were used back in the days to Make televisions and even used as computer displays. How it operates is there is a cathode ray tube which is basically an electron gun ray. It is positioned at one end of the display and a fluorescent screen on the other end. After there is a surge of power in the monitor the cathode ray shoots out high energy electrons from where it is to the fluorescent screen to produce data in the form of images. Apple also used CRT monitors back in 1980 with the classic Apple III computers, 2nd Generation, 3rd Generation, and 4th Generation computers.

Flat Panel Displays

Flat Panel Displays are the displays that don’t use a lot of space which include

Liquid Crystal Display :

(LCD monitors used in Apple and what type of monitors are LCD)

How LCD Displays work is that there are a couple of transparent electrodes and two polarizing filters that consist of a layer of color or monochromatic pixels arranged schematically. When the lights are polarized in different amounts, making it pass through the liquid crystal layer, data can be seen.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Important information: You will often see LCD Displays with LED which just means that the LCD Display is using a different type of backlight compared to the cathode ray tubes used in the past.

LCD consists of two types:

  • Active matrix LCD and
  • Passive Matrix LCD

Active matrix TFT

Active matrix TFT provides better picture quality than Passive matrix Technology which is slower in response than active matrix TFT. Active matrix TFT is also secure and reliable. Due to the popularity of Active matrix TFT passive matrix TFT is becoming outdated.

There are different types of LCD Panels too. This is important to us because most of the apple computers use these types of panels in their display. To better understand the types of panels, here is a list of the panels:

IPS Technology

IPS technology stands for In-Plane Switching. IPS Panels are manufactured by Samsung. It is one of the higher-priced panels that offer the value for its money in the service department. It is considered the best technology for image quality, color accuracy and viewing angle as well. It is also popular because it is the panel technology that is the most durable than any other panel technology. Most of the mid and newer apple computers are equipped with IPS Technology.

VA Panel

VA stands for vertical alignment Panels can be called the mid-tier LCD Panels because its features stand in the right price module for the regular consumers but its features are also limited to its price module. It does perform better color reproduction and wider viewing angles than TN Panels but it comes short if it is compared to IPS Technology.

PLS and Super PLS

PLS stands for Plant to Line Switching. It is also said to be an improved version of IPS Panel Technology. It is 10% brighter, cheaper, less power consuming and even faster response time than IPS Technology. Because of its slim design and profile, it is more fragile. It may be a little cheaper than the IPS technology but it is still more expensive than other panels out there.

AHVA Panel

AHVA stands for Advanced Hyper Viewing Angle. AHVA Panels can be confused with the VA Panels but it is a completely different system than the VA Panel because it uses In-plane switching. It is manufactured by AUO just like how IPS is manufactured by Samsung. It is an IPS panel that has a similar performance like the PLS panels.

TN Panel Technology

TN stands for Twisted Nematics.TN Panel Technology may be considered those panels that may be on the bottom of the list or at the top of the list depending on what you use it for. TN Panel technology is the cheapest panel and offers the fastest response time than any other LCD panels. TN Panel technology is mostly used for gaming purposes. It is also one of the most popular and sought out Panel technology because of its affordability and it’s availability. They are capturing the market with their production numbers and cheap price.

Organic Light-emitting Diodes(LED monitors used in Apple and what type of monitors are LED)

LED is a type of screen display technology that uses panels of Light-emitting diodes as light sources to produce data. Nowadays almost all the electronic devices we use, use LEDs because they are less power consuming and more efficient. LED Panel displays have several LED panel which consists of light-emitting diodes. LEDs are more efficient because they can produce brilliant and greater intensity of light.

After knowing about how LED Panels operate let’s move on to information on how OLED works. OLED does not work with polarization like LCDs. OLEDs use a complex organic light-emitting diode called yep. These yeps light up each pixel under the voltage applied to it. The color that it produces depends upon the organic diode while the brightness depends upon the amount of voltage passed through the system. It can usually reach HDR brightness because unlike LCDs it does not block colors but the molecules put out the right colors.
